Just amazed would describe my Droid experience thus far. In fact I'm making this blog entry on my Droid stuck in interstate traffic! I rarely use my laptop anymore. DROID DOES!!!

Many of you may not have known this but a year ago I weighed 331 pounds. Now I am 6' 4" tall and a very big guy, but 331 pounds was waaaay too much weight for me to be carrying. On November 10th, 2008 I hit rock bottom and decided to do something about it. I basically got pissed at myself for letting things get so far out of control. My wife was very instrumental in motivating me to get going since she had begun really getting in shape over the summer. I hopped on the scale, saw the 331.0 lbs on the display, and went on a mission to fix the problem.

For the past 11.5 months I have put myself on a very strict 1200-1800 calorie per day diet (1200 at first and now up to around 1800) and began working out 3-4 days per week for 30 minutes to an hour at the local gym. After getting the first 20 or 30 'easy' pounds off, I joined a small gym with a personal trainer and he took charge of my overall fitness planning. With his guidance (thanks David!) I really got the ball rolling.

To 'droid or not to 'droid, that is the question?

My awesome VZW business account rep was nice enough to swap out my 9530 for a 9550 no charge. The new device should arrive sometime Thursday. I am very eager to get it up an running so I can test out the 'new click'. I am a very fast BB typist and have even been lightning fast on my S1 with these latest OS versions, but I hope to have greater speed and less hand fatigue on the S2. Not to mention getting wifi back. People that say wifi doesn't matter are crazy.

But with that said... I have been extremely fascinated the past couple weeks about the droid craze. For years now I have had my RIM blinders on (other than buying 3 iPhones lol) and have just not paid attention to android up to that point. Now that all the devices are in the pipeline and photos and specs are leaking, I must say I am very eager to try one out. I even have a 'spare' line with VZW set aside as a wild card that I can use to grab a droid if I decide to. I'm a little apprehensive though because every WinMo device I've tried has been a piece of junk. Hopefully the droid OS is something much more... something more like/better than the iPhone.

I know this topic has been beat to death but why in the world are Verizon and RIM being so hush-hush about the Storm 2 device launch? Possible reasons could be embarrassment over the Storm 1 hype and subsequent fail, last minute problems in production or distribution, lack of confidence in how this device will perform in the market, or any other number of reasons. Only Verizon/RIM could answer for sure. Is it possible they're trying not to overshadow the big marketing initiative they've started centered around the upcoming release of a battery of Android OS devices? Maybe they're just trying to quietly launch the S2, swap a bunch of S1 folks over, and then hopefully silence a lot of their critics. Maybe they're apprehensive about the first 5.0 official OS and how it will perform.

As the launch of the Storm 2 fast approaches I took a moment to reflect on the fate of the Storm 1 owners that are not in a position to immediately upgrade. In short, I believe that Storm 1 owners have a right to be upset with RIM. Am I saying they should jump off the deep end and run get an iPhone or Pre? NO! But I think that RIM really did a disservice to it's customers by releasing the original Storm 1 as such.

First off, the hardware is flawed. Don't even try to argue, it sucks. If you need proof, as them what percentage came back 'defective'. Secondly, the launch OS was nearly inoperable. The lag was terrible, accelerometer didn't work very well, there were tons of glitches... omg flashbacks! Basically wireless customers gobbled up these devices in good faith thinking they were release-ready and they weren't.

A few days ago I hesitantly said farewell to
Twitter… I have nothing against Twitter, in fact I really enjoyed
Tweeting, but it just became too time consuming for me. Through my
personal and professional networking I had accumulated over 200
followers and was following almost as many. With that many friends to
keep track of it just felt like I was standing in the middle of a busy
New York City street with traffic whizzing by in both directions when I
got on there. If I didn’t get on constantly I would miss too much, but
on the other hand if I tried to keep up it consumed all my spare time.

Now that I’m away from Twitter and looking back on it I see where I
went wrong. I should have limited it to just my true friends, news
sources, etc. where it would have been manageable. I am just such a
kind person that I hated to turn down anybody’s friend request which is
what ended up causing the problem. The sad part is that now I feel a
little disconnected from some good pals and it was all brought on by
trying to keep up with people I really don’t know or care about.

This is a test blog entry so I can figure out how this works. Fair warning... once I figure it out I may never shut up :D
